The orthotic service provides assessment, equipment and ongoing care to patients needing external bracing supports. This pivotal role within the Production department seeks a technically proficient individual with strong skills in handwork, machinery operation and manufacturing.

The profession involves crafting specialized medical devices known as “Orthoses.” While relevant experience in a similar context is advantageous, internal and external training will be provided.
The role entails manufacturing custom orthoses and podiatry appliances, as well as repairing and adapting custom and semi-custom orthoses. It includes creating positive and negative casts for orthotic and podiatry devices, as directed by professional staff.

The position is part of a versatile production team involved in all aspects of the manufacturing process.

Job Responsibilities
- Evaluate Client Orders and Requirements: Assess client orders, specification sheets and prescriptions to ensure compliance with MHRSA, European Legislation and Departmental Quality Assurance standards.
- Manufacture Specialized Devices: Produce sophisticated medical devices such as KAFOs and CCDs, covering a full range of orthoses for various skeletal areas, adhering to established work processes.
- Manage Workload and Production: Plan and prioritize workload in the absence of the production manager, ensuring timely production of orthotic devices.
- Perform On-the-Spot Repairs: Conduct repairs and adjustments while patients wait, ensuring prompt delivery of items to clinical areas as required.
- Maintain Work Environment: Foster a positive work environment and ensure readiness for production activities.
- Support Clinical Personnel: Provide technical advice to orthotists and podiatrists on device specifications and supervise clinics to meet unique patient needs.
- Handle Materials and Equipment: Safely handle devices, casts, components and materials in compliance with legal and organizational standards.
- Maintain Equipment and Cleanliness: Ensure cleanliness and proper functioning of equipment and report any issues to the line manager.
- Dispose of Waste Responsibly: Dispose of clinical and industrial waste in accordance with environmental guidelines.
- Create Positive Casts: Use appropriate materials to create accurate positive casts for device fabrication.

Skills and Competencies
Essential Criteria:
- Highly skilled in Orthotic manufacturing, including cast rectification and working with various thermoplastics.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills, with experience using high-speed machinery.
- Proficient in using hand tools for precision cutting, shaping and component assembly.
- Strong hand-eye coordination and meticulous attention to detail.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with a diverse range of professionals.
Desirable Criteria:
- Understanding of Orthotic Administration systems.
- IT skills, presentation skills and experience in audit/data collection.
- Ability to work effectively within a team.
Knowledge (including specialist or technical knowledge required)
Essential Criteria:
- Basic knowledge of upper and lower limb anatomy and physiology.
- Extensive understanding of material science and the manufacturing processes involved in orthotics.
- Practical knowledge acquired through training in orthotic manufacturing and tool usage.
- Capability to provide training and technical guidance to other Orthotic Technicians.
